Looking Into the Past with Nano Banana Pro
With all the obvious caveats about historical accuracy, one of my favorite uses for AI image generation is recreating historical scenes I’ve read about and imagined in my head again and again. Here are two, generated with Google’s Nano Banana Pro (gemini-3-pro-image-preview), each with the exact prompt.
Caesar rides to save Antony at Alesia, 52 BC
Gritty photorealistic battlefield photograph, low aerial view zoomed in close on Julius Caesar during the final relief battle at the siege of Alesia, 52 BC. Caesar is the clear focal point in the center, mounted on a dark warhorse, wearing a muscled bronze cuirass and a brilliant scarlet general’s cloak (paludamentum) streaming behind him so he stands out sharply from everyone around him, galloping at the head of a column of Roman relief cavalry and legionary cohorts toward a stretch of timber palisade wall where the fighting is heaviest. Roman legionaries in mud-spattered segmented iron and mail armor with oval and rectangular shields, gladii and pila, packed and disordered in the chaos of battle. Behind and around them a rough terrain-following earthwork siege rampart with a crude timber palisade and a weathered watchtower, churned muddy ground, trampled grass, broken and scattered stakes. Gallic warriors assaulting the wall in the background. Overcast grey autumn sky, drifting smoke, dust, blood and grime, cold flat diffused light. Nothing clean or tidy, irregular, uneven, worn and battered, brutally realistic gritty documentary war-photography look, shallow atmospheric haze, extreme fine detail, ultra sharp.
Napoleon crowns himself, 1804
Photorealistic elevated wide photograph inside Notre-Dame de Paris, 2 December 1804, the Coronation of Napoleon, viewed from a raised gallery looking down the nave toward the altar. Napoleon Bonaparte stands at the center on a raised carpeted dais directly in front of the high altar at the far east end of the cathedral, with the golden altar, candles and clergy behind him and the sanctuary wall at his back. He is 35 years old, pale, clean-shaven, with a rounded face, a straight prominent nose, and short dark brown hair brushed forward over his brow, wearing a golden laurel wreath and a long crimson velvet mantle embroidered with golden bees and trimmed with white ermine, both arms raised as he lifts a golden crown above his own head to crown himself Emperor. He is the brightly lit focal point. The entire imperial court is arrayed in front of and below him, filling the nave and all facing toward him: Empress Josephine kneeling in white satin at the foot of the dais, Pope Pius VII and cardinals in gold and white vestments to one side, marshals of the empire, ambassadors and ladies of the court in rich robes. Absolutely no one stands behind the emperor. Golden candlelight, tall banners, gilded eagle standards, incense haze, warm natural color, extreme fine detail, ultra sharp, photorealistic.
